Sustainability at Swarthmoor Hall: an oasis with Quaker values

At Swarthmoor Hall we embrace sustainability in line with our Quaker values. Our historic site, dating back to the 17th century, comes with its challenges, but we are committed to innovative practices to combat climate change. As a testament to our eco-friendly initiatives, we have earned a Green Tourism Silver accreditation and are working towards achieving gold level.

Our sustainability initiatives:

100% green energy: We power our operations with 100% clean energy sourced from Good Energy, reducing our carbon footprint.
Bee-friendly practices: In April 2024 we will renew our beehives with traditional wooden designs, expanding our colonies from two to four to support local pollinators.
Farm-to-table allotment: We maintain an onsite allotment where we grow fresh fruit and vegetables. Many of these homegrown delights are served in our café.
EV charging stations: We will be introducing electric vehicle charging points in our car park in the coming months, promoting sustainable transportation options for our guests.
Cruelty-free amenities: We prioritise ethical choices by offering vegan and cruelty-free beauty products in our guest rooms and throughout our facilities.
Energy-efficient accommodation: Our Hampsfell Suite has undergone a sustainable transformation with smart heating controls and energy-efficient LED lighting. We plan to extend these improvements to other suites in the coming months.
Future-ready renovations: For phase 2 of our refurbishment project, we aim to install air-source or ground-source heat pumps in our barn and café, reducing our environmental impact.
